The University of Wolverhampton is a leading modern university with a tradition of providing opportunity and academic excellence dating back since 190 years. The roots of the university lies in the 19th century growth of Mechanics institute, which provided vocational and general education for working men. The Wolverhampton free library also developed technical, scientific, commercial and general clases. Teaching first started in 1851 at the school of art and the study of art became the main key, with the new building and the new name, Municipal School of Art in 1885.
On 1st September 1969, the University of
Wolverhampton was officially designated a polytechnic. Comprising five
faculties- Applied science, arts and design, engineering and social sciences. A
further faculty of education was established in 1977. In 1992, the
Wolverhampton polytechnic was granted the University status and became the University
of Wolverhampton. In present scenario, the four faculties of university
offer courses in over 70 different subjects and over 4000 students graduate
from Wolverhampton every year.
